LOS ANGELES, CA — As postmaster of Los Angeles, Alfred (Al) Santos is responsible for the management of 75 postal stations in the City of Los Angeles.  He oversees 2,225 employees who provide service to over one million street addresses and PO Boxes located in the 900 ZIP Code range, serving approximately four million residents and 95,000 businesses. He administers an annual operating budget of more than $250 million.

That great amount of accountability does not faze Santos, who grew up and still lives in Santa Clarita, CA, and is looking forward to the challenge of managing the U.S. Mail for the most populous city in the state of California, and the second-most in the nation (behind New York City.)

“I’m honored to have this responsibility and trust placed in my hands, and I will strive to provide our customers excellent service,” said Santos at his recent installation ceremony at Deaton Auditorium in Los Angeles, across from City Hall.  “I am also very excited and pleased to be back home in Los Angeles County,” added the new postmaster.

Before his current appointment, Santos served as District Manager for the Sacramento District, and prior to that, he held the position of Sacramento Postmaster.  He also traversed the nation and served for a time as Officer-in-Charge in Boston, MA.  The Los Angeles Post Office was established in 1850 and Santos takes his place as the 37th postmaster of Los Angeles.

“These are exciting times for the Postal Service as we face unprecedented change and financial challenge,” said Santos. “We must reduce our costs and operate as efficiently as possible, while at the same time maintain high service levels.” 

Santos began his postal career as a letter carrier in San Fernando, CA, in 1987, and has served in postal management for 23 years.  He has been married for 26 years to Jacqueline, and they have two daughters, Noelle and Monique.

Santos has lived in the Santa Clarita Valley for most of his life.  He attended Soledad Elementary School, Sierra Vista Junior High, and Canyon High School where he was an accomplished tennis and football player.  Santos was the top varsity tennis player for four years and led the boy’s tennis team to three consecutive championships.  After graduating high school in 1981, Santos attended classes at College of the Canyons before accepting a tennis scholarship to California State University, Los Angeles.  Santos has also taught martial arts for 25 years.  He has run numerous marathons, including the Santa Clarita marathon four times and the Castaic Triathlon.

Throughout his life, Santos has been very involved in community activities.  He volunteered at the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station as an Explorer and has been involved with the local Fourth of July parades, Senior Citizens Food Drives and many church events. Santos also coached high school football at Canyon High in the late 80’s.
