SANTA CLARA, CA — On Friday, February 7, 2014, Andy Ioane will follow a proud tradition dating back to 1851 when Fletcher Cooper served as the first Santa Clara Postmaster. In an 11:30 a.m. ceremony, Ioane will raise his right hand to take the official oath of office as Postmaster at the Santa Clara Post Office, 1200 Franklin Mall, Santa Clara, CA 95050. Manager Post Office Operations Aron Jones will administer the official oath of office.

Ioane started his postal career as a distribution clerk in San Jose in 1983. He started his management career in 1986 as a supervisor at the San Jose Processing and Distribution Center. He held subsequent management positions as supervisor of customer service in Santa Clara in 1989, station manager of Sanchez Annex in 2007, served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Cupertino Post Office in 2009, and was the Postmaster of American Samoa in 2010, the position he held prior to being selected as the Santa Clara Postmaster.

“For me, being a Postmaster is more than a title,” said Ioane. “A Postmaster is the number one public servant for the community he serves. As a dedicated public servant, I plan to provide excellent service to my customers and serve as a leader and mentor to my employees.”

Ioane, 59, and his wife, Debbie, have three children, Andrew, 31, Jason, 27, and Serena, 25.  Ioane has a passion for golf and music and dance from his native home of American Samoa. He and his wife reside in Milpitas.

As Santa Clara Postmaster, Ioane oversees 148 employees who process and deliver a daily mail volume of more than 186,000 pieces to 51,609 delivery points (addresses), on 84 city routes and 3,844 Post Office boxes.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
