ROCKLIN, CA – For most drivers, they can only count themselves lucky for not getting in a major auto accident. For Jimmie Spilatro, 73, maneuvering through the Rocklin city streets while on her appointed rounds, it’s not a matter of luck; it’s a matter of staying focused.
Spilatro has driven enough miles around her city delivery route to circle the globe 40 times, an equivalent of 1 million miles, spanning more than 38 years of service. As a result of her achievement, she will be inducted into prestigious ‘Million Mile Club,’ on Wednesday, February 12, at 08:30 a.m., at the Rocklin Post Office, 5515 Pacific Street, Rocklin CA 95677.
“Safety is very important to me,” Spilatro said. “I have a cell phone but it’s turned off during my work hours. Everyone has problems in their personal life and during the day you can lose focus, but I remember that I have a job to do and customers are depending on me to deliver their mail on time.” Spilatro has never been in an accident in her personal life, even before she came to work for the Postal Service.
“Our postal drivers are among the safest in the world,” said Sacramento District Manager Barbara Plunkett. “The remarkable achievement by Jimmie Spilatro just shows how our carriers continue to deliver on the promise of delivering their best every day with care, courtesy and the concern for the safety of others.”
Spilatro will be presented with a jacket, a plaque and certificate from the Safety Council and automatic membership in the prestigious National Safety Council “Million Mile Club.” The million-mile award is a lifetime enrollment, and it is given to drivers who have accumulated 1 million miles of driving without being involved in a preventable motor vehicle accident. According to the National Safety Council, it takes approximately 30 years to accumulate 1 million miles.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world’s mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
