OAKLAND, CA — As the new lead executive for the Bay-Valley Postal District, Mark Martinez takes over one of the largest, most diverse, densely populated areas in the country, an eight-county, 8,000 square mile area, bounded by Oakland/East Bay, San Jose and south past Salinas to King City, and along the coast from Big Sur to Santa Cruz.
Martinez began his Postal Service career as a mail handler in 1980 in Santa Barbara, CA, and was a letter carrier in Lompoc. He has been a manager in the Postal Service for 30 years.
“The foundation for leadership qualities starts with family,” said Martinez. “Everything you learn that will serve you later in life comes from the core values you were exposed to in a family unit. It begins with trust, and once you establish trust as a value, clarity in focus, collaboration and discipline falls into place. If people trust you, they will follow you, and they will have fun doing so.”
Martinez believes it is important for all employees to understand how the quality of their work affects where the work goes next, and how ultimately that affects the “last mile” of delivery. “It is only through joint effort that we can truly meet the requirements of all our customers, including our own employees,” said Martinez.
Martinez comes with strong managerial credentials. He was the district manager of the Nevada-Sierra Postal District prior to being selected as the lead executive for the Bay-Valley District. He also served as the district manager of the Mid-America Postal District that comprised areas of Missouri and Kansas. In addition, he served as Postmaster of San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield and Las Vegas, NV.
A proud military veteran, Martinez served in the United States Marine Corps, United States Navy and the National Guard.
Martinez and his wife have been married for 40 years and have three children and seven grandchildren.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
