SANTA CLARITA, CA — As Postmaster of Santa Clarita, Gabriel Magdaleno is responsible for the management of two delivery units and five Post Office retail units.  He oversees 267 employees who provide service to over 97,000 addresses on 144 delivery routes, serving approximately 205,000 residents and more than 6,000 businesses in an area encompassing over 62 square miles.

Magdaleno takes the oath of office on Friday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Post Office, located at 24355 Creekside Road. The oath Magdaleno takes at his installation ceremony is the same taken by members of Congress and other federal employees, with the exception of a president. The wording of this federal employee oath dates back to an amendment made in 1861 to the 1789 Oath Act, the first bill passed by the U.S. Congress. Conversely, the 35-word oath taken by the President of the United States on first entering office is specified in Article II, Section 1, of the U.S. Constitution.

A local resident of Valencia, Magdaleno is not fazed with the level of accountability that comes with being postmaster and is looking forward to the challenge of managing the U.S. Mail for the third most populous city in Los Angeles County.

“I’m honored to have this responsibility and trust placed in my hands, and I will strive to provide our customers excellent service,” said Magdaleno. “I am excited and pleased to be back home in the Santa Clarita area and will continue the tradition of dedication and service to the community.”

Before his current appointment, Magdaleno served as Officer-in-Charge in Burbank, CA.. He began his postal career as a Van Nuys, CA, letter carrier in 2003, and moved into management ranks in 2007. As a supervisor and manager, he held various positions of increasing responsibility in Van Nuys, North Hollywood and Burbank. He is a graduate of the Managerial Leadership Program at the Bolger Center of Leadership Development in Potomac, MD.

“These are exciting times for the Postal Service as we face unprecedented change and financial challenge,” reflected Magdaleno. “We must reduce our costs and operate as efficiently as possible, while at the same time maintain high service levels.”

The Santa Clarita Post Office was originally established in 1952 as the Saugus Post Office. The name was changed in 1988 after the unincorporated communities of  Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, and Valencia incorporated into the City of Santa Clarita in 1987. Magdaleno is the 12th official postmaster of the Santa Clarita Post Office.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
