PATTERSON, CA — For most drivers, luck would play a role in driving accident-free for thirty years. For one Patterson city letter carrier, it’s not a matter of luck; it’s a matter of taking the time to drive safely no matter how much of a hurry you are in.
Michael Schut has driven enough miles during his 36-year U.S. Postal Service career as a city letter carrier to equal one-million miles or enough to circle the globe 40 times, all without leaving the city limits. As a result of his achievement, Schut will be inducted into the elite “Million Mile Club” on Thursday, April 17, at 8:30 a.m., at the Patterson Post Office, 50 N. Salado Avenue, Patterson CA 95363.
“Our Postal Service drivers are among the safest in the world,” said Sacramento District Manager Barbara Plunkett. “This remarkable achievement demonstrates how our carriers continue to deliver on the promise of delivering their best every day with care, courtesy and concern for the safety of others.”
When asked for advice to pass on to his fellow Postal Service drivers, Schut shared this safety tip: “I always look three times before pulling away from a mailbox. It is easier to do it right the first time rather than deal with the consequences of injuring a kid or anyone else. I could never live with that.”
Post Office Operations Manager Jagdeep Grewal and Patterson Postmaster Margaret Klein will present Schut with a jacket, a plaque and certificate from the National Safety Council and USPS Safe Driver Award Program. The million-mile award is a lifetime enrollment, and it is given to drivers who have accumulated one million miles of driving without being involved in a preventable motor vehicle accident. According to the National Safety Council, it takes approximately 30 years to accumulate one million miles.# # #

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
