TEMPLE CITY, CA — After serving as officer-in-charge at the Temple City Post Office since April 2011, David P. Encina will take the oath of office as Postmaster on May 9, 2014, at 12:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the Temple City Post Office, located at 5940 N. Oak Avenue, in Temple City.
As Temple City Postmaster, Encina is responsible for the management of postal operations in the 91780 ZIP Code. He oversees 45 employees who provide service to 12,487 street addresses and 1,696 Post Office Boxes, serving a population of over 35,500.
“I’m honored to have this responsibility and trust placed in my hands, and I will strive to provide our customers excellent service,” said Encina.
The oath Encina will take is the same taken by members of Congress and other federal employees, with the exception of a president. The wording of this federal employee oath dates back to an amendment made in 1861 to the 1789 Oath Act, the first bill passed by the U.S. Congress. Conversely, the 35-word oath taken by the President of the United States on first entering office is specified in Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution.
Encina began his Postal Service career in December 1980 as a clerk in Pasadena, CA. In 1994, he transferred to the Rancho Cucamonga Post Office as a sales and service associate at the retail counter. Encina applied for management in 1998 and, after completing a training program, was promoted to Customer Service Supervisor in Upland, CA. He went on to accept assignments of increasing responsibility, including station manager positions at Loma Station in Long Beach, South Station in Alhambra and Plaza Station in Ontario, before being assigned Temple City officer-in-charge.
Encina recently celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary with his wife, Iris, who also works for the U.S. Postal Service as a sales and service associate in Rancho Cucamonga. They have three children.
The Temple City Post Office was established in October 1924 as the Temple Post Office on unincorporated land in Los Angeles County. The name was changed to Temple City in October 1928. Temple City officially incorporated on May 25, 1960. Encina is the 11th Temple City Postmaster.
