ISLETON, CA — Many drivers choose to take the scenic route while on vacation. Isleton’s only rural letter carrier drives the scenic route every day while delivering mail on the Delta Loop and has logged more than a million accident-free miles doing so.
Azalee Bettencourt has driven enough miles during her 37-year career with the U.S. Postal Service to circle the globe more than 40 times, all without leaving her rural community. As a result of her achievement, she will be inducted into the elite “Million Mile Club” at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 15, 2014. The celebration will take place at the Isleton Post Office, 103 C Street, Isleton CA 95641.
“Our postal drivers are among the safest in the world,” said Sacramento District Manager Barbara Plunkett. “The remarkable achievement of Azalee demonstrates how she continues to deliver on the promise of delivering her best every day with care, courtesy and concern for the safety of others.”
When asked about her impressive record, Bettencourt shared this safety tip: “Beware of your surroundings. Always look and listen before moving the vehicle.”
Post Office Operations Manager Arron McGhee and Isleton Postmaster Juanita Wilson will present Bettencourt with a jacket, plaque and certificate from the National Safety Council and USPS Safe Driver Award Program. The million-mile award is a lifetime enrollment, and it is given to drivers who have accumulated one million miles of driving without being involved in a preventable motor vehicle accident. According to the National Safety Council, it takes approximately 30 years to accumulate one million miles.# # #
