YREKA, CA — When customers pull in to gas up at the Miner Street Gas Station at 115 E. Miner Street, Yreka CA 96097, they can now top it off with high-octane postage and U.S. Postal Service products as well. On Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., customers are welcome to join a grand opening as owner Margaret Dean cuts the ribbon as her store becomes a Village Post Office (VPO).
Yreka has a gold-mining heritage, and customers will feel like they’ve struck gold with the community’s first VPO, offering much-needed alternative access to purchase Forever stamps and Priority Mail Flat Rate postage.
Dean has three convenience stores, Sports & Spirits in Mt. Shasta, Miner Street Station in Yreka and Handy Stop in Weed. All three will become Village Post Offices. She feels opening her stores as VPOs will help serve her customers and provide them with additional access for postage and Postal Service products.
Customers are able to purchase Forever Stamps, drop off prepaid mail and packages and pick up free Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes and envelopes. The convenience for customers is that many VPOs offer expanded business hours, including Sundays and holidays.
VPOs are located within existing communities in a variety of locations, including convenience stores, local businesses and libraries, and are operated by the management of those locations.
Post Office Operations Manager Tina Hopkins and Yreka Postmaster Brenda Pope will join Dean in the grand opening ceremony.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.# # #
