Background:

Today the U.S. Postal Service introduces the Red, White and Blue Forever stamps.
The United States flag has long served as a powerful symbol of national pride. This year, the U.S. Postal Service honors the U.S. flag with the issuance of four self-adhesive Red, White, and Blue Forever stamps designed for business use and sold in a coil format of 10,000 stamps. The stamps feature a modern interpretation of a flying U.S. flag, each with a slightly different wave of stars and stripes.

It was President Woodrow Wilson who embraced the idea of a holiday to celebrate the U.S. flag. In 1916, he issued a proclamation in which he suggested that June 14 “be observed as Flag Day with special patriotic exercises, at which means shall be taken to give significant expression to our thoughtful love of America.”

The U.S. flag remains a powerful symbol. “In those broad stripes and bright stars, we see the arc of the American story,” President Barack Obama said in his 2013 Flag Day proclamation, “from a handful of colonies to 50 States, united and free.”

These Forever stamps will always be equal in value to the First-Class Mail one-ounce letter rate in effect at the time of use.

Award-winning art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamps.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
