100th anniversary postcard & postmark of the Stinson Beach Post Office

STINSON BEACH, CA — To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Stinson Beach Post Office, Jim Harvey, Postmaster Stinson Beach, has created a commemorative postcard with a unique postmark to celebrate the event.

The Stinson Beach Historical Society is sponsoring the commemorative event on Friday, April 1, at 5:00 pm on the Village Green at the adjacent Stinson Beach community park.

“In towns and villages across America, the distinctiveness and center of identity comes from the very existence of a Post Office,” said Harvey. “The postmark leaves an indelible mark on the very existence of a community and the Post Office, and the mail that runs through it still binds us together as a nation.”

On April 1, 1916, the Post Office Department opened the Stinson Beach Post Office. E. Louise De Camp was appointed its first Postmaster. The original office was located in a room under the porch of the De Camp family’s home. The community was called Willow Camp, but at the time there were too many other Post Offices with that name, so the office and subsequently the community, were named after the Stinson Family, who were large landholders in the area. When the community grew, the office was moved to Main Street which eventually became State Highway One. Today the office serves this beautiful beach community by delivering mail to 550 Post Office Boxes and providing many Postal Service products and services.

Postal clerk Marcus White, who is the President of Stinson Beach Historical Society, created a “special edition” newsletter describing some of the history of the Post Office in the community.  The SB Historical Society has also created a display at the local library.
