LIVERMORE, CA — On Thursday, May 26, 2016, at 10:00 am, Stephen Mitchell will follow a tradition that dates back to 1869 when John W. Hewitt became the first Postmaster of Livermore.  Mitchell will raise his right hand to be sworn in as the new Postmaster at the Livermore Annex Station, 2090 Las Positas Court, Livermore, CA  94550.

Mitchell started his postal career as a Casual Letter Carrier in 1991 in Livermore, CA.  In 1997, he was assigned to the Fremont Post Office as a Part Time Flexible City Carrier.

In 2007, he completed the Associate Supervisor Program and was promoted as Supervisor Customer Service at the Airport Station, Oakland, CA.  In 2010, he was given an opportunity to serve on a detail as Manager Customer Service at the Airport Station, and subsequently promoted to that position.

“It has been a life-long dream of mine to become a Postmaster,” said Mitchell.  “Becoming the Postmaster of Livermore exceeds that dream.  And what I love to do is serve people, my customers, my employees, and the United Stated Postal Service.”

Mitchell and his wife, Katie, live in Livermore.  They have five sons, Damien, Stephen Jr., Dahl, Paul, Brandon; four daughters, Shana, Irina, Kenya, and Keisha; and 10 grandchildren.  He enjoys bowling, fishing, and spending time with his family when he is not at work.

Mitchell is a graduate of Castlemont High School in Oakland, CA.  He attended Chabot Jr. College in Hayward and Laney Jr. College in Oakland.  He worked as an electrical/mechanical designer at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and at the Rolm Mil-Spec Computers in Santa Clara, where he was promoted as Manager of Design Services.

As LIvermore Postmaster, Mitchell manages all operations at the Livermore Main Post Office and at the Livermore Annex Station with a total of 63 city carrier routes, 15 rural routes, one highway contract route, 27,627 delivery points (residential business addresses) and 1,500 PO Boxes.  He manages 92 employees who process and deliver an average of 296,109 pieces of mail daily.

Oscar Munoz, Manager Post Office Operations, will administer the official oath of office.  Mitchell replaces Jerry Phillips who retired.
