Surge in Parcels Expected on Peak Mailing Day at Burlingame Priority Mail Annex

What:

Customers are expected to bring in 611 million pieces of mail to Post Offices around the country on Monday, Dec. 19. More than 30 million packages, representing a 12 percent increase from last year, will be processed. At the Burlingame Priority Mail Annex, more than 138,000 packages are expected to be processed through the Small Parcel Sorting System (SPSS) on the peak day.

BACKGROUND:

The Postal Service is moving packages faster than ever in the San Francisco postal district and has the newest in package sorting technology at the Burlingame Priority Mail Annex. The SPSS sorts packages that weigh 20 pounds or less — the kind that many retailers use to fulfill orders from online shoppers. The annex recently set a national record by sorting 755,000 parcels in a single week.
