SAN FRANCISCO — On Friday May 4th, 2018 Abraham Cooper will follow a proud tradition dating back to 1849 when San Francisco’s first Postmaster John W. Geary took office.

Cooper will raise his right hand to take the official Oath of Office as the Postmaster of San Francisco at an 11 a.m. ceremony at the San Francisco Post Office, 1300 Evans Ave, San Francisco CA 94188. San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White will administer the official oath of office.

Cooper began his U.S. Postal Service career 30 years ago as a Letter Carrier in North Park San Diego. Five years later he took an assignment in Labor Relations. In October of 2017, Cooper settled in San Francisco and was promoted to his current position as Postmaster of San Francisco. He resides in San Francisco.

Cooper states as the Postmaster of San Francisco he wants to create a culture of change with full employee engagement and team collaboration. “One of my core objectives has always been to create a positive work environment for all employees,” said Cooper. “It is only through joint effort that we can truly meet the requirements of all our customers, including our own employees.”

Cooper attributes much of his leadership skills learned from serving 21 years in the U.S. Navy, both active service and reserves. He served in Desert Shield/Desert Storm, with most of his career on the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, launching and recovering fighter jets. While in the Navy, he was a career counselor and an educational service officer.

In his spare time he enjoys staying active through weight lifting and martial arts, which he has studied for several years. His favorite hobby is cooking and baking delectable treats.
