SAN MATEO, CA — The San Mateo Post Office will host the 26th annual NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive kick-off event this Saturday May 5, 2018.
The San Francisco District of the United States Postal Service and National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is proud to celebrate the kick-off to the largest one-day food drive in the nation — the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Congresswoman Jackie Speier and Assemblyman Kevin Mullins will join postal officials and representatives from the Second Harvest Food Bank at the 8:30 AM kick-off at:
San Mateo Main Post Office
1630 S. Delaware Street
San Mateo, CA 94402
Residents around the Bay Area can participate by leaving non-perishable food items in a sturdy bag near their mailboxes on Saturday, May 12. Letter carriers will collect the food donations for local food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank. Food donations will eventually be distributed to those facing hunger throughout the area.
There are 49 million Americans, 1 in 6 people, who are unsure where their next meal will come from. Of that, 16 million are children who every day suffer from lack of nourishment and the impact it has on their overall health and ability to perform in school. Nearly 5 million seniors are food deprived, who live on fixed incomes and often too embarrassed to ask for help.
Since the campaign began in 1993, the NALC, with the help of volunteers around the country, has collected a total of 1.6 billion pounds of food, thanks to the collective efforts of the community and the letter carriers who make up the NALC. The national food drive has kept many food banks shelves across the country from becoming bare. Last year alone a record total of 75.3 million pounds of non-perishable goods were collected and donated nationwide.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
