What:

The U.S. Postal Service and National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will hold an event to kick off the 26th Annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Food Drive.

When:

Wednesday, May 9, 2017
10:00 a.m.

Where:

Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank
9850 Distribution Avenue
San Diego CA 92121

Background: San Diego Postmaster Linda Crawford, NALC Branch 70 President Ricardo Guzman and James Floros of the Jacobs/Cushman San Diego Food Bank will join with postal employees in a local effort to support the national drive to collect food to feed America’s hungry. The kick-off is intended to raise awareness of the one-day drive to help local food banks replenish their stock needed to feed hungry families in San Diego City and County.

The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.

Through a lot of hard work, dedication and compassion — and the support of customers in the communities they serve — total donations during the 25 years the drive has taken place has surpassed one billion pounds of food.

The 26th annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Food Drive is May 12, 2018. On that day, residents are asked to leave non-perishable goods for letter carriers to collect during their appointed rounds.
