BOULDER, CO —  The United States Postal Service and Boulder County Sherriff’s Office are calling Boulder, CO, Letter Carrier Adrian Helwig a “hero.”

Helwig helped save an 86-year old Boulder man who was unable to reenter his home and was outside in the elements for more than two hours. On Dec. 5, around 8 PM, the carrier delivered a parcel to the customer’s home in a secluded, dark residential area when he heard a whimpering call for help.

Helwig investigated and discovered the man, sitting on his driveway, propped against his garage door. He had fallen looking for his pet and was unable to reenter his home because of his injuries. The man was barefoot and without adequate clothing to protect against the 20-degree weather and high winds.

He had been in the elements for more than two hours.

City Carrier Helwig carried the gentleman into his home, wrapping him a blanket and called 911. He waited for emergency personnel to arrive and then continued on his route. The man survived and is recovering from his injuries.

A forthcoming Boulder Sheriff’s Commendation says, “(victim) survival was at risk. Adrian Helwig’s awareness, and selfless, compassion actions likely saved his life.”

“Adrian’s direct concern and selflessness makes him a hero in the eyes of the Postal Service and to the community,” said Boulder Postmaster Mike Fittje.  “We are often the eyes and ears of where we serve – even in our busiest season.”
