Instead of accepting a change of address, the Tariffville Post Office is filing one.
At the direction of the landlord, the Post Office was evacuated today after the discovery of structural damage in the facility. No one was injured but there was still no re-entry into that building, located at 39 Main Street, by the close of business today.
The Simsbury Post Office will welcome customers from the neighboring Hartford County hamlet’s post office effective immediately.
No timetable for a return of postal services to Tariffville has been established.
Given the emergency nature of the evacuation, postal officials note that mail was secured inside the building until access is again authorized. This includes items in approximately 165 post office boxes and mail deposited in the course of today’s business.
A collection outside the post office will also be off limits for local use until safe access to the box is assured.
The Simsbury Post Office, located on 932 Hopmeadow Street, will provide over-the-counter handout service to post office box holders from Tariffville starting Saturday morning. Customers may be asked to present identification for security and protection of their mail.
Affected residents will continue to use their current Tariffville address.
There is no change for delivery services in the surrounding area.
Weekday window hours at the Simsbury Post Office are 8:30 am to 5 pm on weekdays. Saturday hours are 9:30 am to noon for window services.
