An Emergency Suspension Results in Change of Address for Yantic Post Office

February 06, 2012

YANTIC, CT — The Yantic Post Office, located at 131 Yantic Road in Yantic, will be closed indefinitely at 5 p.m. today for an emergency suspension of services after officials noted deficiencies in safety and security at the site.

Yantic Post Office Box customers may pick up their mail at the Bozrah Post Office, located 1.2 miles away at 181 Fitchville Road in Bozrah. Hours there are 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon and 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. until noon on Saturday.

A notice has been placed on the door of the Yantic Post Office to direct customers to Bozrah for their mailing needs or to retrieve their mail.  No change of address is required.

Postal officials will review the condition of the Yantic Post Office to determine the best course of action for the future of that office.  According to postal operating procedures, an emergency suspension can occur at the discretion of postal management because of a natural disaster, eviction, safety or serious health issue or if the facility is in substandard conditions.

An emergency suspension is not a decision to permanently close a post office.  But it does automatically trigger a formal study on whether a post office should be discontinued.  That study looks at several issues including office workload, customer demand and availability of alternatives. A timeline for the study has not yet been determined.
