The United States Postal Service will present a proposal to relocate the Norwich Post Office, located at 340 Main Street, to 292 Salem Turnpike in Norwich, Connecticut.

The presentation will be made as part of a public meeting at Norwich City Hall, located at 100 Broadway in Norwich. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in Council Chambers. The Postal Service will also explore establishing a Contract Postal Unit in the Norwich downtown area. A Contract Postal Unit (CPU) is a Post Office that is located inside a retail establishment and operated by the retailer's employees.
Public input on this proposed relocation is welcome.  Postal customers can provide written feedback or express their concerns at the meeting. All feedback will be considered before a final decision is reached.

Written comments are being accepted through December 3, 2013.  Please submit comments to:

It is not necessary to attend the meeting in order to comment.

A dramatic drop in mail volume due to electronic diversion has created dire financial challenges for the Postal Service, requiring a multi-facetted approach to reducing costs and increasing revenue. Right sizing the organization’s Real Estate is part of that strategy.

The USPS receives no tax dollars for its operations or facilities, and covers these costs solely through the revenue received from the sale of its products and services.

A self-supporting government business, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 151 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With nearly 32,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 35th in the 2011 Fortune 500. In 2011, the U.S. Postal Service was ranked number one in overall service performance, out of the top 20 wealthiest nations in the world, Oxford Strategic Consulting. Black Enterprise and Hispanic Business magazines ranked the Postal Service as a leader in workforce diversity. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for six years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
