Background: |
The USPS Springfield Network Distribution Center serves as the sorting center for almost all packages coming to or from the New England area and parts of New York. The facility normally processes about 250,000 packages per night packages but during this holiday season, those figures almost double. Almost a half million packages are expected to be processed on Monday, December 15th. Traditionally, two Mondays before Christmas is projected to be our busiest day of the year. This is an opportunity for media to tour and film the back operation where they may see package volume that might be the envy of the North Pole. Come and see Santa’s “other” elves, working very hard behind the scenes, to make sure that your holiday packages get to you by Christmas Day. The Springfield NDC is staffed by more than 1300 postal employees. Other Postal Service efforts to meet holiday challenges include delivering packages 7 days a week, including Sunday, between now and Christmas and opening a limited number of retail offices from 1-5 on the next 2 Sundays (December 14th and 21st) to ensure that all of the presents make it home by Christmas Day. |
