Philanthropist Mary Lasker stamp

The U.S. Postal Service has issued a 78-cent Mary Lasker definitive stamp in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive pane of 20 stamps. Designed by Ethel Kessler, Bethesda, MD, the stamps are on sale nationwide. 50 million stamps have been printed. The 78-cent stamp is the First-Class postage rate for a mail piece weighing three ounces.

This stamp, in the Distinguished Americans series, honors Mary Lasker (1900-1994), a philanthropist and citizen activist known for her enduring commitment to increase funding of medical research for major diseases and for her contributions to urban beautification.

Created by Mark Summers, Waterdown, Ontario, Canada, the stamp artwork is based on an undated, black and white photograph. Summers is noted for his scratchboard technique, a style distinguished by a dense network of lines etched with exquisite precision.
