Post Office Operations Restored in North Florida

and Southern Georgia

Only Two Offices Remain Closed in Aftermath of Hurricane Matthew

JACKSONVILLE, FL — U.S. Postal Service Gulf Atlantic District Manager David Martin announced today full services have been restored to most Post Offices affected by Hurricane Matthew.  Two offices remain closed, Elkton, FL and Tybee Island, GA.  Four South Georgia Post Offices that were closed immediately after the storm have reopened: Jekyll Island, Jessup, St. Simon and Sea Island. 

Operations for the Elkton Post Office, 5785 County Road 305, Elkton, FL 32033, have been moved temporarily to the Hastings Post Office, 200 Concran Ave., Hastings, FL 32145. Hastings Post Office hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and closed Sunday.

Operations for the Tybee Island Post Office, 102 S Campbell Ave., Tybee Island, GA 31328, have been moved temporarily to Savannah's Wilmington Island Station Post Office, 463 Johnny Mercer Blvd. Suite B2, Savannah, GA 31410.  Wilmington Island Station hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and closed Sunday.

"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to our customers and will be working to restore Post Office operations for our offices in Elkton, Florida, and Tybee Island, Georgia, as soon as possible," said Martin.

Martin offers these tips to postal customers in areas affected by the storm:

  • Be sure no debris or obstructions block access to your mailbox.
  • If your mailbox is badly damaged or destroyed, please replace it with a secure, USPS approved receptacle with your address clearly displayed in order for your letter carrier to leave your mail at your residence. Mail cannot be delivered unless an appropriate receptacle is provided.
  • If your residence is uninhabitable, please contact your delivery Post Office to request a 30-day hold on your mail or to complete a Change-of-Address card to facilitate the delivery of your mail to a valid temporary or new permanent address.  Change-of-Address cards are available at your local Post Office. Change of address information can be also filed on the Postal Service website at www.usps.com
  • If you file a temporary change of address, be sure to cancel it once you return to your residence or if you file a new temporary or permanent change of address.
