Duluth, GA  — The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 24th annual nationwide Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive on Saturday, May 14. Stamp Out Hunger! is the nation’s largest single-day food drive.  Last year, with the help of thousands of volunteers, letter carriers across America collected nearly 71 million pounds of non-perishable food and helped bring the grand total to more than 1.4 billion pounds; More than 1,849,396 pounds were collected in Georgia.

Making a donation is easy.  Customers should leave non-perishable food donations in a bag near their mailboxes on Saturday, May 14, for letter-carrier pickup. In the days leading up to the Food Drive, letter carriers will deliver special bags that may be used to make your donations. Donors can also use their own bags. Food collected during Saturday’s drive will be delivered to local community food banks and food pantries for distribution.

While all non-perishable donations are welcome, the most-needed foods are high in protein such as canned tuna, salmon, beans and peanut butter.  Canned fruits and vegetables, whole grain, low sugar cereals, macaroni and cheese dinners and 100% fruit juice are needed as well.

A ceremony to pronounce “NALC Food Drive Day in the State of Georgia” will be held at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 10, in front of the Boggs Road Postal Store, 1605 Boggs Road in Duluth. Atlanta District Manager Scott Raymond will read a proclamation from Gov. Nathan Deal. Several Atlanta District postal officials and letter carriers are to attend. The public is invited.

(Note:  Participation in the Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive is voluntary by local NALC branches.  For participation in your area, check with your local post office.)
