Riverdale Police Maj. Gregory E. Barney
The Riverdale Post Office, Church Street Station, will be dedicated in honor of fallen officer Major Gregory E. Barney at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Riverdale Town Centre, 7210 Church Street, Riverdale.
Maj. Barney was shot and killed on Feb. 11, 2016, while giving chase to a suspect during a raid on an illegal drug operation. Major Barney was a 25-year veteran of the Riverdale Police Department. Career stints included service as a school resource officer at Riverdale High, a sergeant and a captain.
“This couldn’t be a more fitting tribute for a truly dedicated servant,” said Riverdale Postmaster T.E. Lowery, Jr.
Congressman David Scott, (D-GA), who authored the legislation to designate the Riverdale Post Office in Barney’s honor, called the dedication a “worthy salute.
“I am honored to pay tribute to Maj. Barney and his legacy with the renaming of the Riverdale Post Office in his honor,” Scott said.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
