Post Offices Open on Christmas Eve

But Most Closing at Noon; Nine Offices Closed All Day

December 21, 2010

Honolulu – All but nine Post Offices across the state will be open for business on Christmas Eve, but 73 offices will shorten their retail lobby hours on that day. Regular mail delivery out of those offices for Dec. 24 will be unaffected by the changes.

Two small postal facilities serving Pearl Harbor Naval Base, the Hickam, Tripler, Fort Shafter, Laie and Nanakuli Post Offices on Oahu, and the Kukuihaele and Hawaii National Park Post Offices on the Big Island will be completely closed on Christmas Eve. Those eight offices do not provide delivery service.

The Honolulu Airport Post Office will be the last to close on Christmas Eve, at 4:30 p.m.

In order to accommodate customers hoping to pick up mail after retail lobbies close on Christmas Eve, most offices will have normal Will Call operations throughout the afternoon. Specific revised hours will be posted at each Post Office. To obtain the phone number of a specific Post Office, customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS.

All Post Offices will be closed Dec. 25. Regular Post Office hours and mail delivery will resume on Dec. 27.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
