WAILUKU — The Wailuku Post Office will observe Passport Day in the USA by hosting its second annual Passport Fair from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Mar. 9. During the fair, postal employees will serve as dedicated Passport Acceptance Clerks, accepting new applications and answering questions about the application process. No appointment is necessary.

Post Offices and other passport acceptance sites across the country are holding similar fairs on the same day. The mission of Passport Day in the USA is to reach out to U.S. citizens nationwide with an annual, nationally-coordinated event that provides convenient and valuable passport services to customers. The Wailuku Post Office is the only Post Office on Maui holding such an event.

“We had such a positive response to last year’s event that we’re going bigger this year,” said Wailuku Postmaster Michelle Almeida. “We’ll have more employees assigned to help customers with their passport applications and to provide assistance with such issues as name changes and lost passports. We’ll even be passing out fun activity booklets for kids.

“We’re happy to leverage the convenience of the Postal Service to help our customers apply for passports during what is typically the peak month for passport demand.”

The Wailuku Post Office is located at 250 Imi Kala Street, in Wailuku.

The U.S. Postal Service accepts passport applications at more than 6,000 USPS retail locations across the country. During USPS’s 2012 fiscal year Post Offices in Hawaii processed more than 24,000 passport applications. The Wailuku Post Office processed 633 passport applications in FY2012.

Application forms, information on fees and how to apply for a passport book and/or passport card can be found at usps.com/passportor travel.state.gov/passport. U.S. citizens also may obtain passport information by phone, in English and Spanish, by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 1-(877) 487-2778.

New passport applications must include two types of identification and a passport photo. The Wailuku Post Office is equipped to take and print out passport photos for customers for an additional $15 fee.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
