DES MOINES, Iowa — Jackie G. Cook will be officially sworn-in as Des Moines’ 34th postmaster at a brief installation ceremony scheduled Friday, April 30, at 10 a.m., at the Des Moines Main Post Office, located at 1165 2nd Avenue.

“Our goal is to be a customer oriented business that provides quality service to the greater Des Moines community,” said Cook. “It’s my job to oversee mail delivery to businesses and residential customers – and my focus will be to continue to improve service,” he added.

Cook, a Tennessee native, has been a postal employee for 31 years, and began his career as a letter sorting machine clerk in Nashville. He has served in a variety of management positions, and most recently was the postmaster of Cedar Rapids. He’s also served as the postmaster of New Ibera, LA; Columbia, MO and postmaster/plant manager in Quincy, IL.

Cook is responsible for 16 Contract Postal Units (typically located in grocery and convenience stores) and 15 postal stations, with more than 500 employees in the Des Moines metro area. He also manages mail delivery to nearly 350,000 postal customers.

Cook replaces Kyle Collinsworth, who transferred to the Elkhart, Iowa Post Office.

Now a Des Moines resident, he is married with two children.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
