October 04, 2010

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa’s two largest mail-sorting centers are gearing up for the busy holiday mailing season by offering temporary employment at the U.S. Postal Service’s Network Distribution Center (NDC), located at 4000 109th Street in Urbandale, and the Des Moines Processing & Distribution Center (P&DC), located at 1165 2nd Ave.

The holiday mailing season typically takes place between mid-November and mid-January.

“These temporary positions pay competitive wages and most new hires will average 40 hours per week,” said Jim Herrmann, senior plant manager for the Postal Service’s Des Moines-based Hawkeye District. “Shifts and days off will vary,” he added.

The hourly wage for both casual clerks and casual mailhandlers is $11.50, while temporary tractor-trailer operators will earn $15 per hour.

Tractor-trailer applicants must have a valid CDL Class A license and two years of general driving experience with at least one year full-time or equivalent, of driving 7-ton trucks or buses of 16 passengers or more. A minimum of six months of the required total driving experience must be in a tractor-trailer.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
