CHICAGO, IL — Most Post Office retail counters throughout metropolitan Chicago will close at noon on Friday, July 3, 2009 to enable retail employees to spend more time with their families. Noon will be last collection for mail deposited in blue collection boxes that day, except as noted below. All collection points that have a regularly scheduled collection time prior to 12:00 PM (noon) on Friday July 3rd will be collected as scheduled. Regular mail delivery for July 3 will be unaffected by the change. P.O. Box mail access will only be available until 12:00 PM (noon) in those Post Offices where retail counters and access to Post Office Boxes are co-located and are affected by early retail closing.
“As many businesses close early on July 3rd,” said Chicago District Manager/Postmaster Gloria Tyson, “the number of customers visiting our lobbies greatly diminishes. We view this as an opportunity to afford retail employees more time with their families by closing retail operations in most of our locations early on July 3rd."
The following Post Office retail counters will remain open until 5 pm on July 3rd and mail deposited in lobby collection bins and blue collection boxes located inside and outside these Post Offices will be picked up at 5 pm that day:

- Chicago - Cardiss Collins Postal Store (Main Post Office), 433 W. Harrison St.
- Chicago - Fort Dearborn, 540 N. Dearborn
- Chicago - Graceland Finance Station, 3024 N. Ashland Avenue
- Crystal Lake , 301 East Congress Parkway
- Des Plaines, 1000 East Oakton
- Downers Grove, 920 Curtis Street
- Elgin, 66 Grove Court
- Evanston, 1101 Davis Street
- Gurnee, 1 North O’Plaine Road
- Joliet, 2000 McDonough Street
- Kankakee, 475 East Court
- La Grange, 121 West Hillgrove
- Melrose Park, 1824 North 25th Avenue
- Orland Park, 9500 West 144th Place
- Rockford, 5225 Harrison Street
- Schaumburg , 450 West Schaumburg Road
- Sycamore, 106 East State
- Worth, 11114 South Harlem Avenue
Commercial customers are asked to check with their Bulk Mail Acceptance Unit for July 3rd hours of operation. To obtain the phone number of a specific Post Office, customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS.
Post Office retail counters will be closed on Saturday, July 4, 2009 (Independence Day – a federal holiday) and there will be no mail delivery.
Post Office retail counters will resume regularly scheduled hours of operation on their next scheduled day.
