Let The Postal Service Take The Stress Out Of Tax Day

April 08, 2010

CAROL STREAM, IL — Who says April 15th has to be taxing? Not the U.S. Postal Service. Across the country, postal employees are gearing up to provide last-minute relief to millions of taxpayers and procrastinators, too.

Like clockwork, many American taxpayers will wait until April 15th to mail their federal and state income tax returns. This year, as in the past, the Postal Service will be waiting for them. Haven’t sent your taxes in? You’re not alone. Typically, 20 percent of all Americans wait until the last week to file their returns.

All retail locations in Northern Illinois will maintain their normal business hours. For details on services and hours for Northern Illinois District Post Offices, call 1-800-ASK-USPS (275-8777).

But to help with last minute procrastinators, three processing and distribution plants will be accepting mail later in the evening On April 15, mail will be collected at 11:59 p.m. from collection box locations outside the Processing and Distribution Plants and postmarked with the April 15 cancellation.

* Automated Postal Centers (APC) provide many of the products and services available at a Post Office retail window including booklets of First Class stamps, certified mail with return receipt, and delivery confirmation. Using debit and credit cards, APCs enable customers to weigh and mail letters and parcels. They also dispense postage strips in any amount for mailing Express Mail, Priority Mail, First-Class Mail, and Parcel Post® items. Next to the APC is a collection box for depositing these items. APCs also provide extensive mailing information along with ZIP Code lookup.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
