Background:
The annual NALC Food Drive — held in conjunction with the Postal Service — is the largest one-day food drive in the nation. The effort will help feed families in all 50 states. Donations from this year’s event are expected to push the overall total since the annual drive began 18 years ago to more than 1 billion pounds. Chicagoans donated more than 60,000 pounds of food last year.

Media coverage of carriers returning to their Post Offices with food collected on their routes will be available Saturday afternoon as indicated above. At the Post Offices, the food will be consolidated into vehicles for delivery to local pantries in the communities where the carriers work and serve.

More information on the Food Drive, including the list of participating local pantries, is available at NALC Branch 11’s website, www.nalcbr11.org.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
