South Elgin Post Office Offers Greater Access

PO Box Section In Lobby Will Be Open 24 Hours 7 Days A Week

November 30, 2010

Release No. 11-009

SOUTH ELGIN, IL — The South Elgin Post Office is staying open later. At least the lobby is. Since Nov. 27, 2010 the lobby at the South Elgin Post Office has been open 24 hours a day.

Customers now have around the clock access to the Post Office Box section throughout the year. They couldn’t be happier. “This is something our customers have wanted for some time,” said Officer In Charge Jacqueline Kousoulas. “I’m glad we were able to make this permanent change at the beginning of the holiday season.”

PO Boxes are as secure as mailboxes but provide more flexibility for mail pickup. The convenience of earlier mail delivery is helpful to small business owners. Boxes provide home-based businesses with the ability to separate business and personal mail. The South Elgin Post Office offers PO Boxes that are affordable, convenient and secure. Customers visiting Post Offices will see blue display tags in PO Box lobbies identifying boxes available for rent. PO Boxes can also be found online at www.usps.com/poboxes.

Office hours for the South Elgin Post Office are:

Full Service Retail Counter Hours                                              Lobby Hours
M-F:    8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.                                                              24/7
Sat:     8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Sun:    Closed

Kousoulas also points out that customers can purchase most mailing and shipping products and services available from the Postal Service without making a trip to the Post Office.

Customers can purchase stamps by mail, by phone by calling 1-800-STAMP-24, or at participating Dominick’s and Jewel supermarkets, and Sam’s Club and Costco warehouse stores.  Customers can also purchase stamps and print labels to mail packages, pay for postage and ship items by Express or Priority Mail at www.usps.com.  They can even request a carrier pick up when choosing Express and Priority Mail. They can also purchase shipping supplies, create and send greeting cards, postcards and letters, and put their mail on hold when traveling.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
