CHICAGO – Mail delivery and retail service in the metropolitan Chicago region will be limited today, as a result of the massive winter blizzard.
Where feasible, deliveries will be attempted and window service will be available throughout the region, encompassing ZIP Codes 600-611 throughout the City of Chicago, and Cook and outlying counties.
“The safety of our postal employees and customers is of the utmost importance to us,” said Northern Illinois District Manager Robert Hart. “Therefore, we are respecting the requests of local municipalities and the Illinois Department of Transportation regarding road closures and other transportation restrictions.”
“Despite the inclement weather, employees throughout the region braved the elements and reported for duty,” said Chicago District Manager/Postmaster Gloria Tyson. “Their dedication to serving our customers, especially in conditions like these, is to be applauded. I commend the commitment and dedication of those employees, especially in the City of Chicago.”
“Road conditions may not allow our customers to visit a Post Office today,” said Central Illinois District Manager Peter Allen. “But we are always available online at www.usps.com to get service updates, pay for postage, and conduct other postal business.”
Postal officials are preparing to resume full delivery and retail service Thursday, February 2, conditions permitting.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With 32,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $67 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 29th in the 2010 Fortune 500. Black Enterprise and Hispanic Business magazines ranked the Postal Service as a leader in workforce diversity. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency six consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
