DES MOINES, IA — Iowa’s mail-sorting centers again are gearing up for the busy holiday mailing season by offering temporary employment at the Network Distribution Center, located at 4000 109th St. in Urbandale, and the Des Moines Processing & Distribution Center, located at 1165 2nd Avenue.
Approximately 150 temporary (casual) positions are available in the Des Moines area, with 15 positions also available in Cedar Rapids and Waterloo and 10 positions in the Quad Cities. These temporary appointments are for the period of November 17 through December 31. The hourly wage is $11.50 with varying shifts and days off. Beginning in January, there is the potential for approximately 50 of these positions to be retained for up to six months.
The Postal Service has 20 Tractor-Trailer Operators (TTO) positions available in the Des Moines area. Tractor-trailer applicants must have a valid CDL Class A license and two years of general driving experience with at least one year full-time or equivalent of driving 7-ton trucks or buses of 16 passengers or more. A minimum of six months of the required total driving experience must be in a tractor-trailer. The hourly wage is $21.00.
There are three Auto Mechanic Technician positions in the Des Moines area with salaries starting at $38,000. There are numerous openings for Postal Support Employees (PSE), who will earn from $12.38 to $14.60 per hour performing various duties such as mail distribution, customer service and custodial positions. For a TTO, PSE or auto mechanic technician position, there is a requirement of a written examination through the Postal Service. These positions include limited benefits.
USPS has approximately 60 temporary city letter carrier openings throughout the Hawkeye District, which includes most of Iowa and the Quad-City communities in Illinois. The appointments are for 360 days with the possibility of additional appointments. The hourly wage is $22.15 and will earn one hour of vacation pay for every 20 hours worked. A valid drivers’ license and a good driving record are required.
These job opportunities with the Postal Service earn competitive wages with an additional premium for hours worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. with varying hours of work per week.
