U.S. Postal Service Dedicates Building for Lt. Daniel P. Riordan

ST LOUIS — U.S. Representative Ann Wagner and District Manager and Lead Executive for the U.S. Postal Service Charles Miller dedicated the Sappington Branch Post Office building for Lieutenant Daniel P. Riordan today in a morning celebration of the fallen soldier’s life and service to his country.

Riordan and four of his men made the ultimate sacrifice for their country on June 23, 2007 near Camp Taji, Iraq when they encountered a massive IED strike and were killed instantly.

Raised in Ft. Worth, Texas and later moving to St Louis with his family, Riordan attended Vianney High School where he achieved the Marianist Award for his character and the coveted Gold Circle Award for his dedicated involvement in campus activities and sports.

Riordan accepted an Air Force ROTC scholarship while at Southeast Missouri State. When his vision prevented him from attaining a pilot slot, he began his commission with the U.S. Army.

Riordan deployed In 2006 to Iraq. He was a tank commander in Blue Platoon, D Company, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, 8th Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas.

The dedication honoring Lt. Riordan is a tribute to a man whose sacrifice honors a nation remarked Miller. “The U.S. Postal Service is proud to honor Dan by naming the Sappington Branch Post Office building the Lieutenant Daniel P. Riordan Post Office building.”

Congresswoman Ann Wagner introduced H.R. Bill 324, designating the Post Office building located at 11662 Gravois Road as the Lt. Daniel P. Riordan Post Office Building on September 24, 2015.  The bill was signed into law on November 5, 2015, by President Barack Obama.

“It has been my privilege to sponsor legislation honoring and memorializing our nation’s heroes. Today, we honored a brave patriot who willingly stepped into danger in order to preserve our freedom, Army 1st Lt. Daniel P. Riordan. As we joined together to celebrate his life, I am proud to know the Sappington Post Office will serve as a continuous reminder to our community that our freedom is a gift that comes at a measureless cost.”

The Congresswoman, Miller, Jeanine Rainey, Suzanne Riordan and Nick Riordan unveiled the plaque bearing the name of Lieutenant Daniel P. Riordan. The plaque will hang in the lobby of the Sappington Branch Post Office located at 11662 Gravois Rd., St Louis, Missouri.
