CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago District of the U.S. Postal Service will help last-minute tax filers by accepting tax returns until midnight Mon., Apr.18 at the Main Post Office, 433 W. Harrison Street.

The filing deadline to submit 2015 tax returns is the 18th rather than the traditional April 15 date. Washington, D.C. will celebrate Emancipation Day on Friday, which pushes the deadline to the following Monday.

Collectors will be stationed along W. Harrison Street and S. Canal Street from late afternoon to midnight Monday to accept dropped-off tax returns from customers. The Main Post Office, which is open until midnight on weekdays, will have additional retail staffing to serve last-minute filers who wish to purchase postage or add special services such as Certified Mail to their returns.

All other Chicago-area Post Offices, stations and branches will close at their regular times April 18, and will not offer extended hours or street collectors. Tax returns mailed at those locations must arrive by the closing time to make the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) deadline of midnight.

Tax returns mailed in a street collection box or Post Office lobby drop must be deposited before the last collection time posted on the box to make the IRS deadline. Returns mailed after the last collection time on Apr. 18 will not be postmarked on the 18th, and will be considered late by the IRS.

“The most common mistakes Americans make in mailing their forms are not including enough postage and not providing the correct IRS mailing address,” said acting Chicago Postmaster Tangela Bush. “After the first ounce, which usually covers about four letter-sized sheets, mailers will need to add postage for each additional ounce.”

The IRS will not accept mail arriving postage due. The IRS will accept mail with an additional First-Class stamp to cover the additional postage in lieu of a 21-cent second-ounce stamp.

The U.S. Postal Service reminds taxpayers that it receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
