Lafayette Post Office Announces Delivery Route Changes

Less Mail Due to Slow Economy Necessitates Adjustments

February 25, 2010

Release No. 10-10

LAFAYETTE, IN — The United States Postal Service is responding to declining mail volume by adjusting delivery routes so letter carriers are assigned routes with an eight-hour workload.

“We are moving quickly to adjust carrier routes in response to reduced mail volume, which is a side-effect of a sluggish economy,” said Lafayette Postmaster Tom Matson. “The route adjustment process is one way we can control our operating costs – and keep mail affordable – but we will continue to provide the excellent delivery service our customers deserve and expect.”

Route adjustments in ZIP Codes 47901, 47904, 47905, 47906 and 47909 will go into effect on Saturday, February 27, 2010. Matson said that although the staff of the Lafayette Post Office is working to minimize related inconvenience to customers, he acknowledged that mail for some customers may be delivered earlier or later due to new delivery patterns. “Yes, delivery times may change for some of our customers, and some may notice a different carrier delivering their mail,” said Matson, “but the route changes that we implement will make us more efficient – a good thing for both our customers and the Postal Service.”
