Angola Post Office Adjusting Mail Delivery Routes

Declining Mail Volume Due to Slow Economy Prompts Need for Change

Release No. 10-32

Angola, IN — The United States Postal Service is responding to declining mail volume by adjusting delivery routes so letter carriers are assigned routes with an eight-hour workload.

“We are moving to adjust carrier routes in response to reduced mail volume, which is a side-effect of a sluggish economy,” said Angola Postmaster Jodi Enfield. “The route adjustment process is one way we can control our operating costs – and keep mail affordable – but we will continue to provide the excellent delivery service our customers deserve and expect.”

Route adjustments in ZIP Code 46703 were completed earlier this month. Enfield said that although the staff of the Angola Post Office is working to minimize the impact of these operational adjustments to customers, she acknowledged that mail may be delivered earlier or later than previously due to these adjustments. “Mail delivery times may change for some of our customers, and some may have a different carrier delivering their mail,” said Enfield, “but the route changes that we implement will make us more efficient – which will help the Postal Service reduce operating costs.”

In addition, adjusting delivery routes may result in fewer delivery routes, which reduces fuel consumption and vehicle maintenance and repair costs.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
