U.S. Postal Service and U.S. Postal Inspection Service Join Forces to Aid Consumers

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are observing National Consumer Protection Week by making consumers aware of identity theft and mail fraud scams to help combat these illegal activities.

National Consumer Protection Week, set for March 6-12, is a program established by the Federal Trade Commission to draw attention to fraud and other threats to consumers.

This year’s theme, “Your Information Destination” highlights consumer education resources available from the Postal Service and other federal and state agencies.   

Shredding paperwork containing private information is one way consumers can protect themselves. “Shred It Day” events will take place at four locations in Indiana.  Dates and locations are:

Monday, March 7, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (local time)
Merrillville Post Office, 303 W. 80th Place, Merrillville

Tuesday, March 8, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (local time)
South Bend Main Post Office, 424 S. Michigan Street, South Bend

Thursday, March 10, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (local time)
Fort Wayne Main Post Office, 1501 S. Clinton Street, Fort Wayne

Friday, March 11, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (local time)
Mapleton Station, 2650 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, Indianapolis

Customers are invited to bring up to three file-container sized boxes of documents for shredding free of charge.  Please observe the three box limitation to ensure all consumers can take advantage of this service.
