It’s Easy to File a Change of Address with the Postal Service

Beware of Non-Postal Websites Offering Change of Address Service

April 15, 2011

Release No. 11-16

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — It’s easy to change your address and the U.S. Postal Service offers three simple ways for customers to submit change of address orders:

  • Call 800-ASK-USPS to change an address using the Postal Service’s Call Center
  • Visit usps.com to make address changes online ($1 charge to your credit or debit card)
  • Use the Mover’s Guide, available at all Post Offices upon request at the retail counter.

Several non-postal websites offer change of address services. Some claim to offer change of address service with the Postal Service and some sites offer the service at no charge. Others charge customers fees ranging from $6.99 to $30. Some of the sites look very similar to the Postal Service site. According to Kim Yates, Communications Programs Specialist with the U.S. Postal Service, the Postal Service has no affiliation with the businesses that manage these websites. Yates also stated that customers who have been charged more than $1 for identity verification to change their address have submitted their applications and made payments to these websites, not the Postal Service.

To change your address online, simply visit usps.com. Scroll down toward the bottom left under “Would you like to…?”, click “Change your address” and follow the instructions.

If conducting an online search for the U.S. Postal Service site to change your address, be aware it may not be the first site in the list of search results.
