INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Named for Miami Chief Le Gris, the tiny town of Lagro in Wabash County once competed with but then lost the designation of county seat to Wabash.
On Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, Lagro gets to celebrate its own claim to fame when the 24th Village Post Office (VPO) in the Greater Indiana District opens in the Lagro Town Hall, 230 Buchanan St., Lagro, IN 46941.
Town Hall Clerk-Treasurer Kristi Bone said that she and the members of the town council decided to partner with USPS to keep a postal presence in the community. “At the moment, our Post Office operates for four hours in the morning, and as we’re open in the afternoons, we can ensure that the people of Lagro will have somewhere they can buy stamps and drop off their mail when the Post Office is closed for the day,” she said. “We like to think of it as killing two birds with the one stone — you can come here to pay your water bill, and buy stamps and get postal products at the same time.”
The town hall is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The new postal center will be officially opened by Manager of Post Office Operations Larry Dauby. Several USPS and local officials will be present at the event. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at noon, and an open house will follow from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m.
Last year, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.
VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service, and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
Earlier in the day, a VPO opened in nearby Silver Lake. Several more VPO’s are slated to open in the Greater Indiana District in the next few months.
