INDIANAPOLIS, IN — When Boswell, IN was established in 1872, a small general store was the town's first business. On Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, a first for the town will occur in a convenience store — the modern equivalent of the general store — when a Village Post Office (VPO) opens in the Hub Plaza, 207 N. Old US 41, Boswell, IN 47921. This will be the 32nd VPO to open in the U.S. Postal Service’s Greater Indiana District.
Harinder (Harry) Singh, owner of the Hub Plaza convenience store and gas station says he excited at the prospect of setting up a VPO in his store. “I am open long hours, so I think it’s going to be very convenient for customers to buy stamps and drop off their mail while shopping at my store. I think this partnership with the Postal Service will be good for me and good for the Post Office, as I hope to see an increase in business,” he said.
The Hub Plaza opens at 5:30 a.m. each day and closes at 11 p.m.
The new postal center will be opened by the U.S. Postal Service’s Manager of Post Office Operations Jeff Leffler. Several USPS and local officials will be present at the event. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. and an open house will follow from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m.
In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.
VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service, and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
Another VPO will open in Demotte, IN on Tuesday, March 5, 2013.
