Indianapolis, IN — Just 27 miles from Indianapolis, Jamestown is an old town in Boone County that has evolved into a modern-day metropolis. Founded in 1830, Jamestown is now part of the greater Indianapolis area.
Today, March 26, 2013 the 36th Village Post Office (VPO) in the Greater Indiana District opens at noon at the Jamestown Market, 33 Brush Street, Jamestown, IN 46147. An open house will follow from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. (EST)
The Jamestown Market is a small-town grocery that sells fresh-cut meat, hot deli, produce and gasoline. The Market is owned by Mike Brennan and Mike Cook and has been in business for 16 years.
Brennan says they see the opening of a VPO in Jamestown as a way to help their customers during those times when the existing Post Office is closed for the day. “We put up the VPO sign, and already we’re getting a good response,” Brennan said.
“We view it as offering a service to our customers — they can pick up a book of stamps while they’re buying groceries. And they can also drop off mail at the store. We’re hoping it will increase our foot traffic,” he said.
The new postal center will be opened by the U.S. Postal Service’s Manager of Post Office Operations Carmen Jennings. Several USPS and local officials will be present at the event.
In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.
VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
The 37th VPO in the Greater Indiana District will open in Carthage on Thursday, March 28.
