INDIANAPOLIS, IN— The little town of Worthington in Greene County has achieved fame in several ways. Some of its natives include code breaker Herbert Yardley, honored in the National Security Agency Hall of Fame, composer and marching band leader Fred A. Jewell who worked with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and also what is claimed to be the largest sycamore tree in the nation.
Another claim to fame will occur in Worthington on Monday, April 29, 2013. This is when the U.S. Postal Service officially opens the 40th Village Post Office (VPO) in the Greater Indiana District at 2 p.m. (EST) at the Country Market, 319 Canal St., Worthington, IN 47471. An open house will follow from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Tim Wright has owned the Worthington store for the past six years. “I wanted to open a VPO to add more convenience and service to our customers. We’re a small, farming community, and customers can come in and pick up a book of stamps or the flat-rate Priority Mail throughout the day.
The store is open every day from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.
The new postal center will be officially opened by USPS Manager of Post Office Operations Cindy Klaiber. Several Postal Service and local officials will be present at the event. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10 a.m., and an open house will follow from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.
In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.
VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service, and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
Following the opening in Worthington, a second VPO will open on Friday, May 3 in Greensboro.. Several more VPO’s are slated to open in the Greater Indiana District in the next few months.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
