INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Although the town was originally laid out in 1854, Centerton is now an unincorporated community in Morgan County that is most associated with neighboring Martinsville.
Its claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of basketball player and revered coach John Wooden, who as head coach at UCLA won 10 NCAA national championships in a 12-year period.
On Tuesday, May 6, 2014, the 62nd Village Post Office in the Greater Indiana District opens at Centerton Marathon, 77 Robb Hill, Martinsville, IN 46151. The ribbon cutting will take place at 9 a.m. and an open house will follow from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Centerton Marathon is just off the highway at the crossroads of Centerton and Martinsville and owner Al Abba says he thinks he will see more traffic to his store with the opening of the VPO. “People have been asking me to set one up in the store, and as we’re open around the clock, it will be a great convenience for anyone who wants to buy stamps as they stop for gas and groceries,” he said.
As Abba said, Centerton Marathon is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The new postal center will be opened by Franklin, IN Postmaster Donna Hedges. Several USPS and local officials will be present at the event.
In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.
VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
