INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Warsaw is the county seat of Kosciusko County and is named for the capital of Poland in tribute to Tadeusz Kościuszko, who moved to America in 1776 to fight in the American Revolutionary War, becoming a colonel in the Continental Army. In recognition of his services, the Continental Congress promoted him to Brigadier General.
Kościuszko is not the only distinguished person to be associated with Warsaw, IN. It is also the birthplace of Theodore Dreiser, author of Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy whose books were burned in the local library in 1935, and of Bryan Hickerson, former major league pitcher with the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.
On Wednesday, May 7, 2014 the 64th Village Post Office (VPO) in the Greater Indiana District will open in Warsaw at the Bargain Barn, 1900 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, IN 46580.The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. and an open house will follow from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Owner of the Bargain Barn Harold Schapson is pleased to open a Village Post Office in his store. “We’re in a very heavy traffic shopping area, and I think it will bring more business to the store,” he said. “I think it will be a great convenience for our customers to be able to pick up a book of stamps, or Priority Mail boxes while shopping at our store.”
The Warsaw Post Office is on the other side of the town to the Bargain Barn and Schapson believes being able to drop off mail at his store will be another plus for his customers.
The Bargain Barn opens Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and during the month of May the store will be open on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The new postal center will be opened by Manager of Post Office Operations Larry Dauby. Several USPS and local officials will be present at the event.
In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.
VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
