INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The tiny town of New Ross (population 347), part of Walnut Township, Montgomery County has undergone several name changes in its time, and one more name will soon be added to the town’s history. 

On Tuesday, January 27, 2015, the 78th Village Post Office (VPO) in the Greater Indiana District will open at the New Ross Mini Mart, 107 W. Valley Drive, New Ross, IN 47968.

Coincidentally, the name changes were centered on the local Post Office. Between 1836 and 1837, a Post Office was established in Walnut Township at the home of the Postmaster George Dorsey and this was called the New Ross Post Office. In 1855, John Browning established the town of New Ross then called Valley City. About 1868, the Post Office was moved to Valley City and the name of the town was changed to New Ross to match the name of the Post Office.

The grand opening will take place at 10 a.m. (EST) and an open house will follow from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The New Ross Mini Mart is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The store is closed on Sundays and on holidays.

The new postal center will be opened by Manager of Post Office Operations Jeff Leffler. Several USPS and local officials will be present at the event.

In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.

VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
