BACKGROUND:

As part of Black History Month 2016, the U.S. Postal Service will commemorate the life and legacy of 39th Black Heritage Stamp honoree Richard Allen.

Activist, preacher and civic leader Richard Allen (1760-1831) was born into slavery, but purchased his freedom while in his twenties. This year’s Black Heritage Stamp coincides with the 200th anniversary of Allen's founding of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Philadelphia, and his election and consecration as its first bishop.

Members of the public are very welcome to attend this event. Stamps and stamp products will be available for purchase in the lobby of the theatre.
