Contract Postal Units (CPU) are located inside a retail establishment and run by the retailer’s employees. These in-store CPUs offer a wide range of U.S. Postal Service products and services at the same prices found in traditional Post Offices. There are currently more than 5,000 CPU retailers across the U.S. offering expanded customer access to postal products and services.

Phelps Do-It Best Hardware and Rental is the newest addition to the CPU endeavor.  And on Feb. 4, store owners Barry and Steven Phelps will be joined by postal officials and local dignitaries to dedicate the new facility.

"This is exciting news for Southwest Jefferson County,” said Kentuckiana District Marketing Manager Alisa Zanetti. “We expect this to be one of our most successful CPUs in the Louisville Area “

“I love the hometown feel of this locally-owned store,” she added. “Where else can you pick up an extension cord, check your Post Office Box, eat complimentary popcorn and buy stamps?”

The Phelps Do It Best Hardware and Rental CPU will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday.
There are 17 CPUs in the Louisville area. To find one near you, call 1-800-ASK-USPS, or go online to www.usps.com , click on the “Locate a Post Office” tab, and follow the prompts.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 151 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With 32,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 35th in the 2011 Fortune 500. Black Enterprise and Hispanic Business magazines ranked the Postal Service as a leader in workforce diversity. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for six years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
